After more than 30 years in commercial real estate and a career spent around construction, I’ve seen the full spectrum — from exceptional contractors to cautionary tales. Potter Design Build is, without question, the best firm I have worked with on a personal residence.

My wife and I hired Potter to transform our Early 1900s Craftsman-style home in Grant Park from a modest 2-bedroom, 1-bath one-story into a 4-bedroom, 3-bath home, including a two-story addition. The existing house had suffered from years of deferred maintenance, and we wanted the end result to honor the character of this historic home and neighborhood while modernizing it for contemporary living — and expanding it enough to comfortably host our adult children, extended family, and friends.

Before selecting Potter, we identified more than 15 renovation firms and interviewed a meaningful number of them. We had a clear set of criteria: a full-service firm capable of managing the entire process from design through construction completion; a smaller, local company with lean overhead and the ability to give our project focused, hands-on attention; and, critically, a team with deep expertise in older, historic homes. Potter checked every box.

From the design phase onward, Brent and Michelle were patient, collaborative, and genuinely invested. As my wife and I worked through multiple iterations — rethinking layouts, revisiting design ideas — they never rushed us or made us feel like an inconvenience. Brent and his team navigated the city approval process, including the added complexity that comes with a historic property, with professionalism and expertise. Their knowledge of and respect for early 1900s Craftsman architecture was evident at every step; they understood what made our home special and worked hard to preserve and enhance it.

Throughout construction, Brent and Michelle delivered on every front: reliable, responsive, highly detail-oriented, and skilled problem-solvers when the unexpected inevitably arose — as it always does with older homes. Communication was excellent from start to finish. Their subcontractors were equally impressive — top-notch craftsmanship, quality materials, and the same friendly, professional demeanor you’d expect from Brent and Michelle themselves.

The result is a home that feels both beautifully restored and genuinely new — a rare and remarkable achievement. We are extremely satisfied. If you are considering a renovation, particularly of an older or historic Atlanta home, I would recommend Brent, Michelle, and Potter Design Build without a moment’s hesitation.
